Tradition Lives On at Leelanau’s Peninsula Bel Lago Winery

Founded in 1987, Bel Lago is one of the pioneering wineries of the Leelanau Peninsula AVA which was established in 1982. Now, over 30 years later, Bel Lago grows more that 100 varietals on 37 acres. One of the founders of the winery and to this day winemaker, Charlie Edson, has certainly made his mark in the region. We were fortunate to catch up with him on our visit and during our conversation it was evident that he is passionate about making world class wines grown out of the terroir of the Leelanau Peninsula.

Bel Lago’s commitment to their vineyards and winemaking process reflects clearly on their wines but it was their Pinot Noir and this 2013 Tempesta that we absolutely fell in love with. The 2016 Pinot Noir was smooth and fruit forward with a touch of spice on the finish. It is a wine that you could drink by itself or almost with any meal. The 2013 Tempesta, which is their flagship wine, is a blend using Cabernet Franc as the backbone grape. It is elegant, rich and full of fruit. The wine is aged 32 months in French and American oak and it is one the most unique wines we have tried from the region. It is only produced in great vintage years and it has created a cult following. The attention to detail on this wine even shows on its label which was designed by Charlie’s daughter. We have become big fans of this wine and like many others we will be joining its cult following.

Thanks to Patrick Marino for the hospitality and to owner and winemaker, Charlie Edson, for a conversation that we will always remember! 🍷
