La Cava de Karim Mussi, Where Tradition & Innovation Live in Harmony

When we entered La Cava de Karim Mussi, also known as Ave Maria Purisima, we were immediately taken by its simple beauty. A property that had been abandoned for many years has been brought back to life by Karim and his staff and is now the home to some of the best wines we have tasted.

As we began to explore the winery, we quickly realized that what’s happening at Ave Maria Purisima goes way past the beauty of it’s simplicity. A detail of the forward thinking and contemporary mentality that goes alongside their commitment to tradition is the painting of famed street artist Banksy, which you can find past the grandiose original wood doors of the winery.

Here we found wines holding on to tradition alongside avant garde ones that are proving that Argentina is more than just Malbec. Their new collection called Jardín de los Caprichos (Garden of Whims) is the perfect example of the exciting times ahead for this region.

During our visit we tasted the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon called King for a Day and the 100% Syrah called Fly Me To The Moon from the Caprichos collection. We were absolutely blown away by how good they are. They both showed the characteristics of their respective grapes but with a freshness and uniqueness representative of the terroir and climate of Mendoza. All that said, we also fell in love with their Altocedro Malbec Gran Reserva from La Consulta. Bold, structured and full of fruit, this wine shows why Mendoza with it’s Malbecs has become one of the Wine Capitals of the World.

We would like to thank Gerardo for an amazing tour and tasting experience. Without a doubt a must visit if you are in Mendoza!
